http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=15&art_id=107113&sid=30947481&con_type=1

("The exhibition, which runs until Saturday, is very impressive and worth a visit.")

World in miniature not all child's play

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Many people played with Lego building bricks as children. In recent years, building bricks have become a fad with many adults, because in the process the unrestrained creativity of the builders will show.

City University is this year again holding its building brick exhibition, displaying miniature urban constructions, all in very great detail. Legend Bricks, at the invitation of CityU's War and Adventure Games Society, exhibited several displays at the university's Amenities Building.

I have been to this year's exhibition, Bricks Adventure 2011. Each creation is finely detailed. I met organizer and alumni John Ho, who said the response last year was good so the exhibition is being held again.

Ho said preparatory work took about a year. About 30 fans took part. The main attractions are the Japanese and European city areas.

Last year, the Japanese city area was well received, so it has been expanded. In addition to using real-life scenes from cities such as Tokyo, several small houses with unique styles were built and the models of several old streets were made.

The models of Zenko-ji Temple and the Big Buddha have been improved upon to give the buildings a traditional style. In addition, the plastic sakura trees give a stronger Japanese feel.

There are also landmarks including Kyoto station, with new lines running among the buildings. The train is fitted with a camera to send images to the public TV at the exhibition hall to give visitors a sense of being there.

I spoke to Andy Hung, who was responsible for the urban planning part of the exhibit. He said 200,000 to 300,000 bricks were used for the whole exhibit and the Japanese city area accounted for at least 30,000 to 40,000 pieces.

About 10,000 pieces were used for the Zenko-ji Temple alone. The area is twice as large as that of last year. Hung said that because he had been to the temple before, it took him only a week to complete.

For the European city area, there are a number of Italian and French houses. Some have themes of brand names, including Louis Vuitton and Burberry.

There are also other gorgeous and cute themes including landmarks such as Tower Bridge in London and Dutch windmills. The exhibition also displays models of Utopia, military land and tools of transport.

Hung said the most difficult thing was collecting the various parts and putting them together. As a result of space limitations, they could only take apart their work and transport it to the venue and then put the pieces back together. The process had to be carefully planned.

Things such as how to avoid train collisions and keeping spaces between buildings had to be worked out carefully in advance. The exhibition, which runs until Saturday, is very impressive and worth a visit.

"......The exhibition also displays models of Utopia, military land and tools of transport......"
